Marian Reforms Rome Total War
There has been a lot of talk about the Marian Reforms. Most people agree they occur about the time you get your first Imperial Palace. Some people insist that the Reforms are triggered by building your first Imperial Palace, others say that the trigger is one of the four Roman factions building an Imperial Palace. In my current Julii campaign, the year is 249 BC and my largest city is Arretium with a whopping 15.757 people in it- a long way from getting an Imperial Palace. Mods achievements divinity original sin 2. The Scipii have all of Sicily and Thapsus and nothing more, while I stole Greece away from the Brutii (got there before them because of a Senate mission) leaving them Thessalonica, a Macedonian province (Byzalora or something like that, and a Dacian province.

Nobody is anywhere near making an Imperial Palace.Yet we got the Marian Reforms. This makes me wonder if there is some other trigger, or is it a random event, like the age of death of a general.Any ideas? And please don't come with the Imperial Palace story- in 249 BC there are no Imperial Palaces yet the Reforms hit. Either my version has a nice bug in it, or there is another trigger that hasn't been discussed. I think it might help if every contributor were to mention his/her game version, faction and difficulty level in this thread. In my RTW 1v5, Julii, M/M campaign the reforms arrive consistently with completion of an Imperial Palace, in Patavium. When I backtrack and delete the IP just before it's complete, the reforms do not arrive.I have had a similar experience in RTR:PE 1v6, same game conditions but first IP was in Rome.Edit:Same campaign and conditions in RTR:PE 1v8 but this time there are no reforms after building first IP in Rome. The plot thickens. This message has been edited by nimbert (edited @ 10:32 AM).
My version is the Gold Edition. I usually play H/H, but sometimes campaign hard, battle medium (to avoid bonuses to mine or the AIs troops in battle)Usually the reforms come around the time of the Imperial Palace, which is why I had assumed that was the trigger and generally agreed with the general concensus here. However, in some campaigns it came a few turns later, in others a few turns before. This last campaign, it came just 21 years into the campaign, just after I built my first Pro-Consul palace. I had no city even near the 24000 needed for the Imp Palace (largest city was 9000 population shy of it) and the other Roman factions were just as far away- Scipii had taken Sicily, but the Brutii were stuck in Macedonia. This message has been edited by Terikel706 (edited @ 02:55 AM). With just vanilla RTW, playing as Julii on H/M, I noticed the reforms happened exactly the year after the imperial palace was built. In the 1.5 version, updated with BI installment, playing as the Scipii on H/M the reforms happened after three imperial palaces were built.

However, the first imperial palace built was at Carthage, and the second was I believe Lilybueam (spelling?) on Sicilly (spelling?). The third imperial palace was in Capua, and the reforms happened right after this. So, if it is 3 imperial palaces or an imperial palace on the Italian pennisilla, I do not know.
